Northumbrian Pipes Positioning Guide
Bellows
- Waist strap: Fastened snugly around the waist, but not restrictive.
- Arm strap: Positioned just above the elbow joint (upper forearm) to allow free wrist and finger movement.
- Angle: Bellows should sit comfortably at the side, enabling efficient pumping without twisting the torso.
Bag
- Placement: Tucked under the left arm (for right-handed players).
- Pressure: Gentle, steady pressure from the arm maintains airflow.
- Comfort: Bag should rest against the ribs for long-term play without fatigue.
Chanter
- Held in front: Slightly angled downward.
- Closed end: Unique to Northumbrian pipes, allowing staccato articulation.
- Hand position: Relaxed, fingers covering holes or keys without tension.
Drones
- Across the body: Rest horizontally, often supported by the shoulder or lap.
- Balance: Adjust straps so drones don’t pull awkwardly or shift during play.
Player’s Note: If the arm strap is too close to the hand, it can limit control of the chanter. The strap should be moved higher, closer to the elbow, so the wrist and fingers remain free for precise playing.
